Why does my iPhone save HEIC?
Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it stores the same image quality in roughly half the file size of JPG. The trade-off is compatibility: many Windows programs, web upload forms, and older devices still can't open HEIC files.
Stop your iPhone saving HEIC (permanent fix)
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Camera.
- Tap Formats.
- Select Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
New photos will now be saved as JPG. Note that this only affects photos taken from now on — everything already in your library stays HEIC, which is where the converter above comes in.
Transferring photos to a computer
Go to Settings → Photos and scroll to Transfer to Mac or PC. Choosing Automatic makes your iPhone convert photos to JPG during transfer. Choosing Keep Originals sends the raw HEIC files, which you can then convert here.
