When 1MB is the right target
1MB is the limit you meet on messaging apps, older email systems and forms that accept high-resolution photographs. It is also the point where compression becomes effectively invisible: a 6MB phone photo reduced to 1MB normally looks identical unless you zoom right in. Frequently asked questions
Is 1MB the same as 1000KB or 1024KB?
Strictly, 1MB is 1024KB, and that is what this tool targets. A portal that states 1000KB wants very slightly less, though a file fitting 1024KB will normally pass. If it is rejected, drop down to the 500KB tool.
Why compress at all if 1MB looks the same as the original?
Because the original was probably 5–8MB. Uploading, emailing and backing up a file that is 80% smaller is faster everywhere, and nobody can see the difference.
WhatsApp already compresses my photos. Should I do this first?
If you send as a photo, WhatsApp compresses heavily on its own terms. Compressing to 1MB yourself and sending the result as a document keeps far more quality than letting WhatsApp decide.
Does this work on a phone?
